With heavy hearts, we want to share that our 3-year-old Service Dog (SD) Primrose passed from this world in the morning on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. She had managed to find and eat an Amanita Mushroom. This genus includes the Death Cap Mushroom.
Shortly before Primrose passed, we had done our normal Shoreline and Neighborhood hikes, and we also hiked a new path at Coyote Hills Regional Park. There is no way to know where or when Primrose ate the mushroom, but we want to encourage everyone to be extremely cautious with their dogs during this autumn season. According to Bay Nature Magazine: Mushrooms of the San Francisco Bay Area, mushrooms blossom after fall rains. Even a small amount of a single mushroom can have a devastating impact. Once the toxins invade the system, it is extremely difficult to treat and is often fatal.

Primrose was my second SD. In the 11 months she shared with us, Primrose managed to become my right arm and a loving friend to all. What a gift we received with her loving personality.
We have opened a fund in Primrose’s name to help Canine Companions with their incredible mission. If you feel inclined, please visit our Canine Companions Funding Page created in Primrose honor.
With much love,
Dana, Primrose & Sol
