My journey has spanned continents, industries, and causes—but today, my heart is most fully invested in my work with Canine Companions, a nonprofit that provides expertly trained service dogs to individuals with disabilities, entirely free of charge. As both a long-time volunteer and proud recipient of these remarkable dogs, I’ve seen firsthand how they transform lives with their intelligence, loyalty, and grace.
I actively support Canine Companions through fundraising, events, and public outreach, helping to expand access to service dogs for those who need them most. My own companions—Emiko, Primrose, and Ethel—have been extraordinary partners, each with a unique personality and purpose. Their presence has deepened my commitment to the mission and inspired me to help others experience the same life-changing bond.
Before dedicating myself to this cause, I built a multifaceted career rooted in cross-cultural understanding and financial strategy. After earning a degree in Russian Studies from Evergreen State College and continuing at Moscow University, I helped companies navigate the complexities of the Russian market, including negotiations and oil pipeline development projects.
Later, I transitioned into finance, becoming a Certified Financial Planner and founding a successful planning practice in the 1980s and 1990s. My work supported small businesses and individuals with investment management, college funding, and wealth transfer strategies. I also led compliance efforts for tech funding through the Northern California Association of Broker Dealers, holding both Series 7 and insurance licenses.
My commitment to service has always extended beyond the professional realm. I was a founding member and treasurer of the Clara Mateo Homeless Shelter in Menlo Park, advocating for housing and dignity for those in need. Today, through Canine Companions, I continue that legacy—one paw at a time.
